3DS Emulators for iPhone in 2026: What Works and How to Start
You can play Nintendo 3DS games on an iPhone in 2026, and you do not need a jailbreak or a sideloaded app for it: several emulators on the App Store list 3DS support. They differ a lot in price, reviews and how much of the 3DS they handle well, and the 3DS is far more demanding than older handhelds. This guide compares the 3DS emulators you can get for iPhone, what to expect, and how to get your own games onto them. Last checked: October 27, 2026, against each app’s App Store listing.
The Short Version
- Three App Store emulators list Nintendo 3DS among their systems in October 2026: Folium, Manic EMU and JOY Emulator.
- App Store apps are signed by Apple, update themselves and are never revoked, so start there before you look at sideloading.
- Azahar, the main open-source 3DS emulator (based on Citra), is available for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, not for iOS. An “Azahar” or “Citra” IPA for iPhone is not from that project.
- No emulator includes games. Use backups of 3DS cartridges you own; downloading games you do not own is piracy in most countries.
- 3DS emulation is heavy. Expect newer iPhones to run games better, and expect some games to have glitches or slowdowns. For the original DS, which is much lighter to emulate, see the best Nintendo DS emulators for iPhone.

The Emulators
1. Manic EMU
Manic EMU has been on the App Store since April 2025 and was at version 2.0.1 in September 2026. It is a multi-system emulator: its listing names the 3DS alongside GameCube, Wii, N64, DS, PSP, Dreamcast and many more. It is free, and its listing adds RetroAchievements, save states, fast-forward and cheats. The developer states that the app does not include games, BIOS or game data, and that you should use only legally owned backups, homebrew or public-domain software.
It is the easiest free place to start, and you can use the same app for many other systems.
2. Folium
Folium, by independent developer Jarrod Norwell, has been on the App Store since May 2024 and was at version 2.2 in October 2026. It costs $2.99 and needs iOS 16 or later. Its listing names the 3DS, DS, Game Boy, GBA, NES, SNES, Genesis, PlayStation 1 and a few others, and it supports controllers including DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox Series, Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controller, and the Backbone One.
Its App Store rating was much lower than the free apps’ in October 2026 (2.4 from 844 ratings), so read the recent reviews for your iPhone model before you pay.
3. JOY Emulator
JOY Emulator, from Huizhou Fantasy Technology, is newer: it was at version 1.2.1 in October 2026 and needs iOS 15.5 or later. Its listing names Wii, GameCube, 3DS, N64, DS, the Game Boy family, NES, SNES and Sony systems. It is free. Because it is new, check recent reviews for the 3DS games you care about.
What to Expect from 3DS Emulation on iPhone
- Performance depends on the device. The 3DS has two screens, 3D graphics and a lot to emulate, so newer and faster iPhones and iPads run games noticeably better than older ones.
- No JIT on the App Store. Apple does not allow App Store apps to generate machine code at runtime, so these emulators run without JIT. That limits speed in the heaviest games.
- Two screens on one display. Emulators show the top and bottom screens together, and you tap the bottom screen for touch controls. Try the layout options to see what suits your phone.
- Compatibility differs per game. If a game glitches or stutters in one emulator, try the same game in another one.
How to Install and Add Your Games
- Open the App Store and search for the emulator by name (Folium, Manic EMU – Game Emulator, or JOY Emulator).
- Check that the publisher matches the table above, then tap Get (or the price).
- Copy your game files to the iPhone with the Files app, iCloud Drive or a computer, then import them in the emulator. Our guide on how to transfer games to iPhone emulators walks through each way.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller if you have one; touch controls work, but a controller is more comfortable for longer games.
About Game Files
Emulators are legal, but 3DS games are copyrighted. Use backups of cartridges you own, made with your own 3DS. Do not download games you do not own, and do not trust sites that offer emulators bundled with games, “3DS emulator with all games” IPAs or BIOS packs: they are piracy, and you cannot check what else is inside them.
What About Sideloading?
For 3DS games you do not need Scarlet iOS or another sideloading tool, because the emulators above are on the App Store. Sideloading only makes sense for apps that are not there. Be careful with IPAs that claim to be “Citra for iOS” or “Azahar for iOS”: the Azahar project lists no iOS version, so such files do not come from it. If you sideload anything, check it first; see how to scan IPA files for malware.
