Play! PS2 Emulator on iPhone: What You Need and How to Set It Up
Play! is a free, open-source PlayStation 2 emulator, and it is the PS2 emulator its developer officially offers for iOS. Before you try it, know the main limit: Play! needs JIT on iPhone, and its own README says a game crashes at launch without it. That rules out a quick install with a shared-certificate installer and means a little extra setup. This guide covers what Play! is, what you need, how to set it up, and how to judge the “PS2 emulator” apps you will see on the App Store. Last checked: October 27, 2026, against Play!’s GitHub page and purei.org.
The Short Version
- Play! is developed by Jean-Philip Desjardins (jpd002 on GitHub) and is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and web browsers. It is free and open source.
- It is not on the App Store. The iOS build (Play.ipa) is on purei.org, the project’s own site; the latest stable version there was 0.72, from January 2026.
- On iOS it needs JIT. Without JIT, games crash when they start. On current iOS versions that means installing it with your own Apple ID (for example with SideStore) and enabling JIT with a tool such as StikDebug.
- Play! has a built-in BIOS replacement, so you do not need a PS2 BIOS file. You do need your own PS2 games.
- PS2 emulation is very demanding. Many games are not playable yet; check the official compatibility tracker for the games you care about.
Why Play! Needs JIT
Play! translates PS2 code into code your iPhone can run while the game is playing (JIT, just-in-time compilation). iOS does not allow this by default. Play!’s README lists the ways to get it: an older device setup (iOS 13 or earlier, or an arm64e device on iOS 14.2 or 14.3), a jailbreak, or enabling JIT through other means, and it states plainly that a game crashes at launch without JIT.
On iOS 17.4 and later, the usual way to enable JIT is a development-signed install plus StikDebug. Our StikDebug JIT guide explains how it works and its limits.
What You Need
- An iPhone or iPad. A recent, fast device matters a lot for PS2 games.
- A way to install apps with your own Apple ID, such as SideStore, plus a computer for the first setup.
- StikDebug (or another method from the JIT guide Play! links to) to turn on JIT.
- The Play.ipa file from purei.org.
- Disc images of PS2 games you own.
How to Set Up Play! on iPhone
- Install SideStore with your Apple ID; see our SideStore install guide.
- Download Play.ipa from the stable downloads on purei.org (the newest numbered folder), on the iPhone or on a computer.
- In SideStore, open My Apps, tap + and choose the Play.ipa file.
- Set up StikDebug and enable JIT for Play! as described in our StikDebug guide.
- Copy your game images into Play!’s folder (see below), open Play! with JIT on and start a game.
Refresh SideStore apps every 7 days, or they stop opening. A free Apple ID allows 3 active sideloaded apps, including SideStore itself.
Can I Install Play! with Scarlet iOS?
You can install the IPA, but it will not play games. Scarlet signs apps with a shared distribution certificate, and those installs cannot get JIT, so Play! crashes when you start a game. For Play!, use SideStore or another method that signs the app with your own development certificate. The same applies to other JIT-only apps; see DolphiniOS for GameCube and Wii.
Adding Your Games
Play! runs PS2 disc images. Its README points iOS users to Apple’s guides for sharing files with apps: copy the images with the Files app, or from a computer through Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app or iTunes (Windows). Only use games you own: making a disc image of your own PS2 discs is the legal way to get them, and downloading games you do not own is piracy in most countries.
What to Expect
- Compatibility varies a lot. Play!’s compatibility tracker on GitHub (jpd002/Play-Compatibility) lists reported games and how well they run. Check your games there before spending time on setup.
- Speed depends on the device. PS2 emulation needs a lot of processing power, so newer iPhones and iPads handle it better.
- Save in the game often. Emulator bugs can freeze a game.
“PS2 Emulator” Apps on the App Store
A search for “PS2 emulator” on the App Store shows several free apps with PS2 in their names from various publishers. Play! is not among them, and we could not confirm which emulation code these apps use or how well they run PS2 games. Before installing one, check the publisher, the recent reviews and the in-app purchases, and do not trust apps that offer to download games for you.
FAQ
Is there a PS2 emulator for iPhone without JIT?
Not Play!: its iOS build needs JIT. Without it, games crash at launch.
Do I need a PS2 BIOS?
No. Play! uses its own built-in high-level BIOS, and its README says an external BIOS file is not necessary or possible.
Is Play! free?
Yes. It is free and open source, and the official downloads are on purei.org and GitHub.
Is Play! on the App Store?
No. The iOS build is an IPA from purei.org.
For PSP and PS1 games, which run without JIT from the App Store, see our PPSSPP guide and PlayStation games on iPhone.
