Switch Emulator for iPhone in 2026: MeloNX Setup and Requirements
The Nintendo Switch emulator for iPhone in 2026 is MeloNX, an open-source app built on the Ryujinx emulator. It is not on the App Store, so you sideload it, and it needs two things most apps do not: JIT, which a tool like StikDebug turns on, and a memory entitlement that lets it use more RAM. This guide covers what MeloNX needs, which iPhones can run it, how to install it with a free Apple ID, and the risks to know first. Last checked: 31 October 2026, against the project’s own README.
The Short Version
- MeloNX is the Switch emulator for iPhone and iPad. Its developers say it “REQUIRES JIT and CANNOT run without it”.
- Every device needs the Increased Memory Limit entitlement. iPhones with less than 4 GB of RAM and iPads with less than 8 GB also need Extended Virtual Addressing, which only a paid developer account or TrollStore gives.
- With a free Apple ID, the oldest supported iPhone is the iPhone 12. The project recommends an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
- You need your own games, keys and firmware, dumped from a Switch you own. The project does not provide them and bans requests for them.
Read This First: The Risks
- Fake downloads. Many sites offer “MeloNX IPA” downloads, some bundled with games or keys. The project says any copy bundled with copyrighted content “is done without permission and is not associated with or endorsed by this project”. Get the IPA from the project’s own releases page, and scan any IPA you got elsewhere.
- Keys and firmware. Downloading Switch keys, firmware or games you do not own is piracy. The only legal source is your own console.
- Heat and battery. Switch emulation is the heaviest thing most people run on a phone. Expect a warm iPhone and fast battery drain.
- Not every game runs. MeloNX is based on a PC emulator; heavy games can be slow or crash on phones with less RAM.
What MeloNX Needs
| Requirement | Why | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| JIT | Translates the Switch’s code into code the iPhone runs directly. MeloNX cannot run without it. | StikDebug (the project says it is required on iOS 26), or SideStore on iOS 16 and earlier |
| Increased Memory Limit | Lets MeloNX use as much RAM as Apple allows. Needed on all devices. | Installing with PlumeImpactor (the project’s recommended route); on older methods, the Entitlement app (free account) or Apple’s developer site (paid account) |
| Extended Virtual Addressing | Lets MeloNX ask iOS for more memory than the device has. Needed on iPhones under 4 GB of RAM and iPads under 8 GB. | Paid Apple developer account, or TrollStore |
| Keys, firmware and games | The emulator needs the Switch’s system files to boot games. | Dumped from your own Switch running custom firmware |
Which iPhone and iPad Can Run It?
From the MeloNX README:
- Recommended iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro or newer. The README notes that the 8 GB and 12 GB models “have the same memory limit of 6GB”.
- Recommended iPad: iPad Pro 5th generation or newer (128 GB storage or more, which have 8 GB of RAM), or iPad Air 5 or newer.
- Oldest with a free Apple ID: iPhone 12.
- Oldest with a paid developer account: iPhone 6s on iOS 15.
Older and lower-RAM devices can start the app but run far fewer games well. If you have a choice, test on your fastest device.
How to Install MeloNX With a Free Apple ID
The project’s recommended route signs MeloNX with your Apple ID, not with a certificate, because the memory entitlement is added at signing time. Certificate-based installers such as Scarlet are not the route the project documents for MeloNX.
- Optional: install SideStore first. The project recommends SideStore as the on-device sideloader, so you can refresh MeloNX every 7 days without a computer.
- Download MeloNX from the project’s releases page (linked from its README).
- Install it with PlumeImpactor on a computer: open PlumeImpactor, go to Settings and log in with the same Apple ID you use in SideStore, import the MeloNX IPA, plug in your iPhone, select it at the top of the window and click Install.
- Check the memory entitlement. Open MeloNX and check that Increased Memory Limit shows as enabled. The README’s older methods add it with the Entitlement app (free account) or on Apple’s developer site (paid account).
- Optional: load it into SideStore by installing the same IPA again from SideStore’s My Apps page, so it shows there and can be refreshed.
- Add your files. Use the file picker in MeloNX to add the keys and firmware you dumped, then your games.
- Enable JIT each time you open MeloNX to play. On iOS 17.4 and later, use StikDebug; our guide covers the pairing file and LocalDevVPN it needs.
A free Apple ID signs apps for 7 days, so MeloNX stops opening until you refresh it. A paid developer account signs for a year and adds Extended Virtual Addressing.
Getting Keys, Firmware and Games Legally
MeloNX’s FAQ says that to play commercial games “you will need access to a Switch compatible with custom firmware (CFW)”, which lets you dump your firmware, keys and the games you bought. It links the Ryujinx project’s dumping guides for keys, firmware, and games with updates and DLC. Without a Switch you can still run homebrew apps and games.
Controllers and Features
- Input: touch controls, keyboard, Joy-Con and nearly all MFi controllers. Joy-Con motion does not work because of an iOS limit; other motion controls work in most cases.
- Add-ons: game updates and DLC are supported. Mods and cheats are unsupported but may work.
- Load times: MeloNX caches translated code. The README says you need to launch a game to the title screen twice before the speed-up applies from the third launch.
- Audio: sound output works; the microphone does not.
Common Problems
- MeloNX closes as soon as a game starts: JIT is not on. Enable it with StikDebug, then launch the game.
- Out-of-memory crashes: check that Increased Memory Limit is enabled. On iPhones under 4 GB of RAM you also need Extended Virtual Addressing.
- The app will not open after a week: the free Apple ID signature expired. Refresh it in SideStore.
- StikDebug “heartbeat” or pairing errors: see the fixes in our StikDebug guide.
Other Consoles
Older systems are much easier: PS1, Nintendo handhelds through Delta and 3DS all run without the memory steps above. Our emulators guide lists the rest.
FAQ
Is there a Switch emulator on the App Store?
MeloNX is not on the App Store. It needs JIT, which Apple only allows for an app being debugged, so it is installed by sideloading.
Is MeloNX free?
Yes. It is open source under the GPLv3 license. A paid Apple developer account is optional, but some devices need it for Extended Virtual Addressing.
Do I need a jailbreak?
No. You sideload MeloNX with an Apple ID and turn on JIT with StikDebug. TrollStore is an option only on the iOS versions it supports.
Can I use Scarlet to install MeloNX?
The MeloNX project documents installs with an Apple ID sideloader such as PlumeImpactor, SideStore or AltStore, because the memory entitlement is added at signing time. That is the route we recommend for MeloNX.
Is it legal?
The emulator itself is legal open-source software. Games, keys and firmware are copyrighted: use copies dumped from a Switch and games you own.
